Clergy Appointments April 27, 2024 Most Reverend Stephen D. Parkes has announced the following clergy changes effective July 1, 2024. Read More Today we celebrate Our Lady of Fátima. The Virgin Mary appeared to three Portuguese children, Lúcia dos Santos, Francisco Marto, and Jacinta Marto, on May 13, 1917. Over the next several months, she appeared to them five more times, with messages of prayer, peace, and penance, and warnings of coming trials. On the day of the sixth apparition, October 13, 1917, Mary appeared to 70,000 people who had gathered in the rain to see her. During this apparition, she called herself the Lady of the Rosary and promised an end to World War I soon if people would pray the rosary daily. Soon after, the sun appeared to dance in the sky. World War I ended just over a year later, on November 11, 1918. The apparitions were approved in 1930. Francisco and Jacinta Marto were canonized by Pope Francis in 2017, and Sr. Lúcia dos Santos, OCD was declared Venerable last year. Mother of all individuals and peoples, you know all their sufferings and hopes. In your motherly heart you feel all the struggles between good and evil, between light and darkness, that convulse the world: accept the plea which we make in the Holy Spirit directly to your heart, and embrace with the love of the Mother and Handmaid of the Lord those who most await this embrace, and also those whose act of entrustment you too await in a particular way. Take under your motherly protection the whole human family, which with affectionate love we entrust to you, O Mother. May there dawn for everyone the time of peace and freedom, the time of truth, of justice and of hope.” —Pope St. John Paul II’s Act of Entrustment to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, June 7, 1981 (Pentecost) Image: Sculpture of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima by José Ferreira Thedim, 1920, photographed ca. 1920 Go to Facebook Go to Facebook Go to Facebook Go to Facebook FaLang translation system by Faboba We are here to listen and take action Office of Child and Youth Protection Diocesan 24-Hour Child Abuse Reporting Hotline: 888-357-5330 Abuse hotline for bishops only: reportbishopabuse.org or call (800) 276-1562.
